Private Alexander MacLeod

Alexander Macleod Balblair is proving to be a bit of a puzzle.

There is an Alexander Macleod listed in the Ross-shire  Roll Of  Honour. He appears in the Edderton list under the heading 'other units' which tells us he wasn't in the 4th Seaforth territorials. It does say he was in Kitchener's Army but doesn't give the regiment . However,  this does mean  he was a volunteer before 1915 when the book was published.

When the memorial was unveiled in the speech he is stated to be in the 4th Seaforths.  There are three Alexander Macleods recorded as died in the 4th Seaforths. From Creich died 11 - 8 -1915, Durness died 10-4-1917 and Wick died 15- 4 1915.

In the 1915 People's Journal the following article appeared :

"A crack shot Pte A J Macleod of local company 4th Seaforths wounded at fighting at Ypres on May 5th died in hospital. He was an old memberof the corps and had left it but rejoined when the war begun. Part of the crack shot Edderton team that won the Astor Cup. Pte Macleod was a railway surfaceman at Ardgay."
