Hugh MacLean  was born and brought up in Edderton with his older sisters Barbara and Jessie and younger sisters Jane and Annie. His father Alexander had the croft at Bravard, Edderton. His mother is Annie on the Commonwealth graves certificate but the various census over the years record her as Jessie.

He is recorded as having died on 10th June 1916 and is commemorated on the Loos memorial which means he has no known grave. He is also recorded as having been killed in action in the 180th Tunnelling Company which would be correct as the tunnelling Companies began at 170th.
